Data & method

Open geodata from the Confederation and the cantons. Our own calculation for every address.

No third-party ratings: SunPlot uses the geodata of the Confederation and the cantons to calculate what sun, shadow and location mean for an address.

The nearby places come from OpenStreetMap (© OpenStreetMap contributors, ODbL). They are only displayed in the report and are not passed on as a dataset; we will share the method we use to prepare the extract on request.

The report summarises the information from the cantonal PLR cadastres; in the chapter “Plot and land-use planning” it states the canton’s credit line, the date of the extract, the notice text from the extract and a link to the official extract. Extracts from Basel-Stadt are licensed under CC BY 4.0, extracts from Valais under CC BY-SA 4.0; we reproduce them in summarised and therefore modified form. We do not take over any content from cantons for which use in the report is not permitted or not yet clarified; there, the report only shows a link to the canton’s PLR cadastre.

List as of 12 October 2026. We add new datasets here and in the report.

Privacy by design

In the app and in the checker, your browser does the calculating; ordered reports are created by our server. No user accounts. Coordinates are sent to federal services, to the cantons, to OpenStreetMap and to our own geodata server.

The report is non-binding additional information and does not replace an expert opinion or official information. Values are calculated, not measured.

Method

Figures and charts, calculated specially for your address

Official maps show what is there. SunPlot calculates what that means for your address: sun, shadow and view are recalculated every 10 minutes throughout the year — from terrain, building models and trees from laser scanning. The values apply to a point at the roof ridge of the building. They are calculated, not measured, and do not replace an expert opinion or official information.

The basis is freely accessible geodata from the Confederation and the cantons (swisstopo, SFOE, FOEN, ARE, cantonal hazard maps and others) as well as OpenStreetMap for the surroundings. The analysis — the sun and shadow values, the charts, the comparison — is SunPlot’s own calculation work and is created afresh for each address.

Coverage

What’s available at your address?

Terrain, aerial photo, trees and all filter maps come from the Confederation and cover the whole country. The 3D building models with roof shapes (swissBUILDINGS3D 3.0) cover all of Switzerland; the data date varies by map sheet. Some cantonal hazard maps are not released for commercial use. The checker shows you this for every address before you buy.

Check an address now

Building models: swissBUILDINGS3D 3.0 with roof shapes, covering all of Switzerland. The data date varies by map sheet (captured 2013 to 2025); new buildings put up since then are missing from the model, so their height comes from the laser surface model instead.

What happens to your address

In the app and in the checker, your browser does the calculating; we don’t store the addresses you enter there. Ordered reports are created by our server; for this we store the property address and coordinates together with the order. Coordinates are sent to federal services, to the cantons, to OpenStreetMap and to our own geodata server. What we store when you order, and for how long, is set out in the privacy policy.
